Everything you need to know about polycarbonate sheet

24 May 2022

Polycarbonate sheets are everywhere across the UK. From bus shelters to sneeze screens, polycarbonate sheets are installed as a cost-effective and lightweight alternative to glass. A natural choice for many manufacturing and installation companies, these thermoplastics are known for their durability and versatility - meaning polycarbonate sheets suit a range of applications, both indoor and outdoor.

As such an essential plastic sheeting product, it’s important that fabricators understand its full use and potential. Therefore, we have created this guide to polycarbonate panels - so you can refer back to this when you need additional information.

In this guide, discover:

  • What exactly a polycarbonate sheet is
  • Which applications and uses polycarbonate sheeting is ideal for
  • Advantages and disadvantages of using polycarbonate panels
  • Tips on fabricating and installing

This helpful blog post will provide you with important information that will inform your polycarbonate sheet buying decisions. However, if you need more information, contact our team.

What exactly is a polycarbonate sheet?

Polycarbonate is a transparent sheet of thermoplastic. It has the same transparency as glass - but less than half the weight. One of its most important characteristics is its strength. In fact, the impact strength of polycarbonate sheet outshines standard acrylic and glass, making it perfect for demanding applications - such as safety glazing and roofing.

Perspex Distribution supplies polycarbonate sheets cut to size. We offer a range of polycarbonate sheet materials to suit various applications, materials and transparencies.

What applications are ideal for polycarbonate?

Here are some common applications:

Street furniture

Furniture that’s open to the elements and the public must be manufactured from strong, resistant, cost-effective materials. Polycarbonate can be abrasion-resistant to protect against weathering elements and vandalism.

Signage

Durable and weather-resistant, polycarbonate is ideal for exterior signage including Opal Polycarbonate for light box applications.

Automobile & transport protection

Requiring high-performance materials for daily use and maximum safety, polycarbonate sheets can be used in various transportations including glazing, cladding, partitions and lighting fixtures. Its excellent strength to weight ratio helps to minimise vehicle weight and increase fuel efficiencies.

Medical equipment

Screens, lenses, cameras and medical aids are essential in the health industry - polycarbonate is applied to maximise durability.

Glazing

The term ‘glazing’ covers a wide range of applications, from machine guards to curtain walls and street furniture. Whatever the specific application, we can supply a polycarbonate panel to suit.
More applications for polycarbonate sheets
There is an endless list of polycarbonate sheet uses. Here are additional applications:

  • Roofing
  • Machine guards
  • Vending machines
  • Windows

What are the advantages of polycarbonate?

There is a multitude of benefits when it comes to installing and utilising polycarbonate sheeting.

  • Impact-resistant - very low chance of breaking with over 200x the strength of glass, yet the same thickness.
  • Lightweight - easy to install.
  • Weather-resistant - resistance to UV means it won’t deteriorate outdoors.
  • Fire-resistant - with a BS 476 Part 7class 1 fire safety certification, and it is self extinguishing as soon as a direct flame is taken away.
  • Recyclable - a sustainable product which supports the construction industry to build structures that are considered environmentally friendly.

Are there any disadvantages to polycarbonate sheets?

As with many plastics, the surface of Polycarbonate can be scratched so it is important to take care when handling and cleaning the surface.

Tips for installing or fabricating polycarbonate sheets

To achieve a clean, high-quality finish, we recommend following these tips

  • Ensure you’ve selected the right type - whether it’s an opaque polycarbonate sheet or a clear Palsun polycarbonate sheet will depend on your application
  • Avoid extreme heat - although polycarbonate sheets are heat resistant, they are also a thermoplastic, so if the heat is intense enough (such as naked flame), you could damage the finish
  • Don’t attempt to cut the polycarbonate sheet yourself if you’re not experienced/ trained - although it can be cut with a variety of power tools, Polycarbonate is very strong and must be carefully handled. Find out how to cut polycarbonate sheets here.

We can cut each polycarbonate sheet to size to match specific requirements. Each variation of polycarbonate sheet is available in different thicknesses, colourways and finishes.

  • Clean regularly - use mild dish washing detergentand warm water to keep your polycarbonate looking well maintained. Go over with a dry cloth to prevent watermarks.
