Floating Cinema Launched
Building on the resounding success of the Floating Cinema 2011, UP Projects have recently launched a brand new Floating Cinema for 2013. Designed by Duggan Morris Architects and working in partnership with artists and filmmakers Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie (aka Somewhere), the cinema has been constructed using engraved Perspex® cast acrylic to glaze and clad the Floating Cinema Auditorium.
The project was conceived and commissioned by UP Projects, a public arts organisation based in East London. The floating cinema will feature a new "Extra-Ordinary" programme of outdoor screenings, canal tours, workshops and events along the waterways of East London and beyond.
Using 25mm clear Perspex® cast acrylic, the sheets were engraved with a bespoke pattern. Working with Atrium Ltd, an external lighting system ‘captures’ the light on the Perspex® acrylic to brilliant effect.

This unique project was the winner of an Architecture Foundation led international design competition, and has already received prominent publicity through the architectural and construction press as well as online, and has been awarded a Special Judge’s Mention at the 2013 Architectural Review Future Projects Awards.
“We wanted this year's programme to say that it's London's ordinary people that make its culture so extraordinary, and to spotlight some of those people and what they do in life, as well as to make sure they are at the heart of the programme as an active audience. The Extra-Ordinary theme offers a celebration of the overlooked and 'ordinary' in life, and brings to the fore the brilliance to be found on our doorstep." Somewhere 2013
