Perspex® Origami created by K2 Associates
We have seen Perspex® acrylic fabricated in many innovative ways, but never origami!
Perspex® clear cast acrylic has been used to create an origami sculpture to mark the 30th anniversary of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton. Seatrade, designed by Frank Worthington and fabricated by approved Perspex® Fabricator K2 Associates, is a sculpture symbolising the research, law reform and professional training undertaken by the institute over the past 30 years.
The sculpture was the end result of a competition launched in 2011 by the Institute of Maritime Law, open to students at the Winchester School or Art.
The origami boat is fabricated in clear 3mm Perspex® acrylic taking advantage of the exceptional light transmission of the product to create a dramatic effect.
Following discussions with K2, the boat was manufactured from a single sheet of Perspex® with 15 hot wire bends. Before fabrication the sheet was laser etched in high definition with extracts from 19 separate documents that relate to maritime law and trade.
Mounted on a sloping, black Perspex acrylic plinth, the boat, with a bow at each end, is a metaphor for the two-way nature of sea trade and shipping lanes.
K2 Associates, based in Hertfordshire, have been fabricating acrylic for 25 years and the original team of Ken Day and Kevin Hill remain today, leading their team of expert craftsmen as one of the UKs leading plastic fabricators. K2 are able to manufacture using all manner of plastic sheet from Perspex Acrylic, Polycarbonate, PETG and many other materials.
