Polystyrene

General purpose and high impact polystyrene sheets are rigid, lightweight thermoplastic sheets available in clear and a limited range of colours.

Clear polystyrene sheets

With a wide temperature window the material can be formed into shapes with fine detail over short cycle times and with pre-drying rarely required. Polystyrene is also resistant to solvent attack and therefore readily accepts screen print inks or solvent cements.

Polystyrene Sheet Applications

Polystyrene sheet is ideal for indoor glazing applications.

Typical applications:

  • Picture framing
  • Display cases
  • Wallpaper protection
  • Room dividers

Benefits of Polystyrene Sheet

Economical

Solid polystyrene sheets are a relatively economical material to use when compared to similar products.

Strong yet lightweight

Polystyrene has a high tensile strength for its thickness, making it an ideal replacement for glass as it’s less likely to shatter but still has the protection properties.

Good workability

Polystyrene sheet is particularly easy to work with, cutting and drilling the material requires basic tools and is quite straightforward.

Glass like quality

Clear polystyrene sheet is strong yet light in weight, it also has a glass like clarity, making it safer to use whilst being stronger than glass.

Polystyrene vs. Acrylic

Polystyrene is ideal for flat internal generally used more commonly in indoor applications whereas acrylic can be used in indoor and outdoor applications.

Acrylic is similar in that it is shatter resistant so is also an applicable material for similar uses, however, acrylic offers a level of UV protection, meaning the artwork it is protecting is less likely to fade.
